Following a Supreme Court Order dated 13th March, 2018, Insurance regulator IRDAI extended the deadline for linking the 12-digit unique identity number with various insurance policies. A Constitutional bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra declared that March 31, 2018, the deadline for linking Aadhaar with government welfare schemes, stands extended till they decide on the validity of the 12-digit biometric number.

A group of petitioners had challenged the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar scheme, and sought an extension to linking the Aadhaar with various government schemes. However, the deadline doesn’t apply to government subsidies like LPG or kerosene.

For a new insurance customer, he/she will be allowed a six-month period from the commencement of the account based relationship to submit the Aadhaar number. IRDAI also informed that in case of ‘No Aadhaar card’, customers must submit any of the official documents as mentioned in the Prevention of Money-Laundering Rules, 2005. For NRIs, they need not surrender their insurance policy in the absence of Aadhaar. They can also submit their valid official documents based on provisions under the Prevention of Money-Laundering Act. According to Attorney General KK Venugopal, the Centre had extended the deadline earlier too, with the potential for future extension if need be.
